Classes prepare you to pursue your high school equivalency (HSE) diploma through the GED® test. Passing the GED® test provides a HSE diploma to those who did not finish high school.
Pathways to Achieve Your High School Equivalency Diploma
- Rio Salado College offers GED® test preparation classes that review the four subjects covered on the test: Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, and Science. Test prep classes are offered in-person at locations in Maricopa County and live-online through Rio Salado’s Virtual Learning Academy.
- In addition to passing the GED® Test, students must pass the Arizona Civics Test to earn an Arizona High School Equivalency Diploma. To be eligible for any of the three HSE pathways in Arizona, students must be 16 years of age or older, not enrolled in high school, and lack a high school diploma.

- Students enrolled with Rio Salado College’s Adult Education program can earn their High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma by earning a total of 22 points in specific areas of academic and career readiness.
- Academic readiness can include: high school credits, college credits, or 2014 GED® Tests passed.
- 14 points must be earned from academic classes: English Language Arts (4 points), Math (4 points), Science (3 points) and Social Studies (3 points)
- Career readiness can include: Rio Salado’s Career Training programs, college credit in approved career classes, employment or internship, or industry recognized credentials.
- Eight points must be earned using any combination of eligible career readiness options.
- In addition to earning the required 22 points, students must also pass the Arizona Civics Test to earn an Arizona High School Equivalency Diploma. Rio Salado College is pleased to announce a new scholarship opportunity for students who prefer to take college classes to earn their High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma as an alternative to passing GED® tests. The scholarship covers tuition, fees, and class materials.
This scholarship is for students who:
- are interested in simultaneously earning a college degree and their HSE diploma,
- have a financial need,
- prefer not to take GED® tests, and
- are self-disciplined and comfortable with taking classes online.
Additional scholarship information
Your scholarship team member and academic advisor will help you choose and enroll in the courses that meet the College Credit Pathway to HSE and your degree requirements to accelerate your academic progress. Students must earn a grade of C or better to maintain continuing scholarship funding.
The Arizona Department of Education requires that you to pass the Arizona Civics test and complete 25 college credits offered at Rio Salado College that best suit your academic journey. You will choose 100-level courses within general course areas based on the following:
- English Arts - 4 credits
- Mathematics - 6 credits
- Natural Science - 4 credits
- Social & Behavioral Sciences - 3 credits
- Computer - 3 credits
- College/Career Exploration - 3 credits
- Arizona Civics Test - Pass
